In Others’ Words: Dogs and Cats and You and Me

Pets 2016 take two

I’ve never done a double quote blog post before. But tonight I wanted to write about pets and if I only chose a quote about dogs I’d be alienating all of you cat lovers. Likewise, if I only chose a quote about cats, I’d offend all of you dog lovers. So yes, I straddled the virtual fence and chose two quotes.

I also know people have goldfish as pets. And guinea pigs. And snakes. And all other sorts of animals. But for the sake of this blog post, I’ll limit myself to dogs and cats, okay?

This is our grande dame dachshund, Twister, doing what she does all day: sleep.

And yes, it’s true some people aren’t into pets … but I would wager the vast majority of people around the world have had some experience with having a dog or a cat as a pet. We’ve loved them and yes, we’ve lost them — and losing a much beloved pet is an especially poignant loss, whether you are a child or an adult. It. Just. Hurts.

I love both cats and dogs. I love the way cats purr and pounce and yes, the way they “own” you. And I love the wholehearted affection dogs offer us … and the way playfulness seems inbred in them from the day they are born until the day they take their last breath.

This is my daughter’s dog, Jo. She’s a rescue dog and she needs lots of love and attention. Ask me how I know.

My family and friends know I’m afraid of dogs because of a few scary incidents with uncontrolled dogs while I’ve been out walking. But the truth is, I’m more afraid of their owners and how they don’t care enough to train their dogs or to supervise their dogs so that they won’t hurt someone like me — or a child. I’m an adult, I’ll cope with being afraid. No child should be chased by a dog simply because its owner is irresponsible.

But I digress.

Pets are a responsibility, what with feeding them and grooming them and training them. But dogs and cats bring fun and joy and, at times, a sense of calmness, into our lives, too.

In Your Words: Are you a cat person or a dog person — or are you both? I’d love for you to share a favorite pet story today. What do you like best about having a pet?

  1. Great post!

I’m both, but am pretty allergic to cats (we have two).

Favourite story…well, yesterday. Thought I was about to faint, and quickly lay down on the floor…and suddenly, I could not take a breath. It felt exactly like drowning (thank you, California seaweed, for that experience way back when).

I started flailing my arms, and felt strength going…and Syl came running up so I could grab her collar. She pulled me into a sitting position, Ladron pushing from behind, and I could breathe, raggedly.

And then there is the story of the Great Canine Wine-Tasting Party, in which a jug of wine was dropped and consumed by four dogs (all of whom now chase sticks for Jesus). One backed herself into a corner and barked furiously, two wandered around wearing big silly grins, bumping into each other, and one cleared off the dining-room table and went to sleep.

Oh, Andrew: I knew I could count on your for some good dog stories — and you didn’t let me down! I love how your dogs care for you. It comforts me to know they are there for you, day in and day out. And the Great Canine Wine-Tasting Party? Such a vivid image!
      🙂

  2. I love both cats and dogs but if pressed…I will admit I’m more of a cat person. I am owned by 2 cats,Rascal(all black) & Callie(a tortie with definite tortitude at times but who has made me her person),and am about to take in a 3rd cat. She is a super friendly stray I’ve been feeding for a few months and I’ll be taking her to the vet very soon to get examined, shots, spayed. Her name is either Aimee or Joy.
