In Others’ Words: Entertaining Hope

Entertaining Hopes 2016

Are you entertaining hope?

Indulge me for a minute while I play with that word “entertain.”

Have you invited “great hopes” (plural) into your life? Anticipated the arrival of great hopes? Thrown the door wide open and embraced great hopes telling them, “I’m so glad you’re here! I’ve been waiting for you!”

Or have you told “great hopes” they’re not welcome in your life? Is there a “Great Hopes Not Welcome” sign posted by your front door? When hope comes knocking, do you keep the door shut and the lights out?

 I’ll admit there are days when I don’t treat hope well. I ignore it, while I open the door wide to doubt. Or fear. Or woe is me. To be honest, something happened yesterday that was a bit of an emotional sucker punch. I could have gotten dragged under by discouragement and lost sight of who I was and abandoned something I’d put a lot of hard work and hope in …

 … but I would have been listening to someone else’s opinion of me. Opinions come and go. Sometimes they’re favorable. Sometimes they’re not. It all depends on who’s doing the talking, right? Listen to the people who know you best.

If you’re entertaining hopes of any kind — and I pray you are — you’re inviting other people to hope and dream with you. There will always be people who just aren’t going to get it. To be honest, some people won’t like your dream at all.

So be it.

Keep dreaming. Dream bigger. Hope bigger.

In Your Words:  What great hopes are you entertaining today? When your hopes get trampled on, who helps you dust them off and keep dreaming?

  1. Important thing is not worry about my hopes, encourage others instead. All are fragile. Calls to mind this from Sir Walter Scott’s “Rokeby”

    Hearts are not steel,
    and steel is bent;
    hearts are not flint,
    and flints are rent.

  2. I almost always entertain hope. Had to go back and add the almost. 🙂 And you’re right, not everyone will like your dreams, or in my case my stories. That’s why I don’t read reviews, good or bad. Reviews and sales aren’t up to me. That’s God’s domain. And I try very hard to stay out of His way.

      I almost always never read reviews. Had to go back and add in the word almost. Sometimes the reviews sneak through in various ways — you know what I mean. And then I have to remember reviews and sales aren’t up to me. Determining my worth — that’s God’s domain.

  3. I knew I saved this one to read a second time when I had a moment to sit and absorb your post. Thank you. Great reminder to keep the door open to hope
