In Others’ Words: Small Joys

Small Joys

Just for today, let’s set aside the word “goal,” shall we?

Just for today, let’s also set aside the word “happiness.” (Although I had an interesting discussion about happiness while I was in Breckenridge this past weekend. Another blog post.)

Small joys. I want to talk with you all about small joys.

So often I laser in on the goal — whatever goal I think is going to bring me the “big happiness” — and I overlook all the small joys in every. single. day. You’re human just like me. And I know you can get wrapped up in goals and run right past the daily joys, too.

I’m on an editing deadline right now. The “big happiness” at the end of that goal? My new release in May 2018. But what are some small joys from this week?

  • Praying with my daughter CJ before she headed out for volleyball tryouts.
  • Watching my GRANDgirls romp in the Chik-fil-a play area.
  • Scrolling through my Instgram feed and “hearting” all the uplifting posts. (I love Instagram!)
  • Walking in the evenings with my husband and our dog, Jo, who is named after Jo in Little Women

In Your Words: I’d love for you to join the conversation today. What are some of your small joys from this week?

  1. My biggest small joy is not throwing up first thing in the morning. I hate waking up to the taste of puke.

    Seriously? Uh…that IS seriously.

And in the furnace-heat of pain, a cooling breeze from a fan, or from outflow winds from a summer storm, that’s beyond price.

More? Ladron the Service Heeler’s paw on my foot as I write this, so she can be alert to anything that goes wrong.

    And even more?

My email, just after midnight on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I see “Beth Vogt: In Others’ Words” in my inbox. Those are highlights of my week.

Good morning, Andrew: I like to see your name in my inbox, too, my friend. And I like cool breezes … and the thought of Ladron standing guard over you. We share some of the same small joys. 🙂

  2. Hardly any of my joys are small this week, they’re all huge: Crossing the tumultuous, exhilarating Irish Sea the day after it was canceled for wild weather, and loving it all w/o getting sick. Finding a spare seat w/ going to see Stirling & Doune Castles. Having a friend book ferries to take me to Oban, Mull, even Iona where St. Columba developed his community. We had talked years ago of that place & I’ve read & studied. I absolutely would never have requested being taken there–all in the category of “more than you ask or think” and I’m very grateful. Lvg. to fly home all day Monday.

Thank you for joining the conversation today, Wendy — and for you encouraging words! I’m so glad that Instagram allowed us to become friends. Your posts encourage me, too! 🙂

  3. An 85-degree temp in August in North Mississippi. 🙂 Sitting on my deck, listening to the birds sing. A safe journey home on a long highway at ten o’clock at night. Your posts, even when I don’t comment.

Oh, Pat, you brought a smile to my face as I sit here, thousands of miles away in CO. I’m snuggled up in my teal bathrobe, sipping tea and coughing because, hey, what better way to wind down the summer than with a cold, right? But I’m thankful friendships can span the miles … and I’m thankful that you had a safe journey.
