Quiet-emotions.-Bombeck.-2014

Today would have been Erma Bombeck’s 90th birthday. I’ve always enjoyed her humorous — and truthful — view of life. So, I’m celebrating this wonderful writer today by posting not one, but two of her quotes.

Dream Box 2017

I’m keeping today’s post brief, after spending the past four days in Phoenix, cheering my youngest daughter’s volleyball team on while they competed at the Festival Fiesta Classic. It was a wonderful time — and now it’s time to get back to real life.

In Your Words: What are your thoughts on Erma’s quotes? Which one speaks to you today?

  1. Interesting quotes! I always enjoyed Erma Bombeck’s writing.

As for the first quote, being a Vulcan, I eschew emotion. Logically, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. Period.

This segues into my thoughts for the second quote…

I don’t believe that dreams are important; deeds are. My dreams for my life, my marriage, and my career were incompatible with a houseful of dogs who had no other recourse…and those dreams were worth sacrificing for their safety.

Real life is what happens while you’re dreaming, so make it count.

And Andrew, I am going to have to disagree with you on #2 — believe me, I am not going to argue about your Vulcan heritage!
I believe caring for those dogs, providing them with a safe home and with love … that is your dream. That is also a beautiful dream being lived out every day, despite your own challenges. You didn’t leave your dream in a box and just look at it. You acted on it and made a difference.

  2. Erma Bombeck was one of my favorite people. Did you know she died waiting for a kidney because she wouldn’t use her celebrity status to put her name at the top of the transplant list? She lived what she wrote.

  3. She was a loving and wise Yiddisher Mama. The one that strikes me today is that, “love is so quiet, you don’t even know it’s there.” Yet it has a delicate and sweet discernible fragrance that won’t be forgotten and when you enter arenas without it, your heart mourns its absence. You are the queen of great quotes, Beth. Thanks.

  4. I loved both of these quotes (and both were new to me, as well). Like Dee, what stood out the most tome was the thought of love being so quiet one may not even know it’s there. My husband lives this out every single day. He loves our fmaily in quiet, meaningful ways. Love doesn’t need to announce its presence, people grasp thta it’s there in the actions love takes.
