In Others’ Words: To the Ordinary

Happiness is in front of Me. Brown. 2014

Ah, the lure of the extraordinary moments.

When life is more than fine … beyond the best that I can imagine … lit up like a 4th of July sparkler.

Yes, I’m grateful for those moments.

And then there are the moments where life is … good.

When there are no dirty dishes in my sink because my husband, bless the man, filled the dishwasher and scrubbed the pots.

When snow is falling outside and I can enjoy the beauty of it because we have a south-facing driveway and rarely have to shovel it.

When my house is cluttered, yes, with stuff to do — but more, it is crowded with the people I love.

The ordinary moments of life. I don’t have to chase those. Lord, please help me be more mindful of the happiness they bring.

In Your Words: What ordinary moments are right there in front of you — filling your days with happiness?ย

  1. Looking up from my computer and out the window of my office just in time to see the sun top the trees. ๐Ÿ™‚ And going out to pick up the paper at 5 in the morning and seeing the Little Dipper overhead, then following the handle to the North star.

  2. Being around my family gives me joy, and music can fill me with happiness. I live in a rural community and each day I drive through farmland to and from work. I love seeing fields of cattle or horses. I’ve become fascinated with barns, and God often provides amazing sunrises and sunsets for me to enjoy. (I know he doesn’t just provide them for me, but they warm my soul just the same.)

  3. I’m privileged to have been in your home and love how you and Rob, and now your children, work to make it joyful, filled with and beautified by the Word, and happily “cluttered” with the comfortable interaction of people who love each other. Keep letting that flow in your writings, and change the world.

      Andrew:
You’ve created a corner of heaven by offering a haven for dogs who’ve been wounded and abandoned.
      “The least of these.”
And yes, I do believe God cares about the animals because he created them and called them good.

  4. Loved this, Beth. Let’s see–ordinary…a chaotic morning (every school day morning is) with chatty boys who tease each other and love each other. When they’re not beating up on each other (verbally or physically). Warm food on a freezing cold morning. Cuddled with same boys and praying on the couch before they head off to school? That’s my taste of ordinary/extraordinary.

  5. Beth, sometimes it’s hard to love the ordinary moments, especially when you’re waiting on your dreams to come true. But sometimes it’s in the ordinary moments that your dreams come true, and you could miss it if you’re not watching closely. I like washing dishes while barefoot, watching movies with my family, and singing along to my favorite CDs. Those little moments make me happy and remind me that dreams can be different than you thought and still turn out pretty amazing.

    Hugs,
    Andrea

  6. I’m grateful to be catching up on some blog reading, especially one about gratitude that includes a Brene Brown quote. Y’all are insightful writers. And I loved reading about your south-facing driveway … what a treat to have snow without the shoveling. I’ve been especially thankful lately, but I can never read enough about it or be reminded often enough to be grateful for everything. Every. Single. Thing.
