In Others’ Words: Comfort

Beth VogtLife, Quotes, Reality 24 Comments

“Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand-in-hand.” ~Emily Kimbrough (1899-1989), American author & journalist

Sometimes I trip myself up all by myself. I rush through my day and forget an all-important something on my To Do list.

Or I say something I shouldn’t. Or don’t say something I should.

I doubt instead of having faith.

Anger flares instead of a flourish of grace.

And then there are the times when others trip me up when an unkind word or an incorrect (and hurtful) perception of who I am.

Yes, my life can be a series of missteps and stumbles.

And that’s when I am thankful for the people who know all about me and who still like me, still love me — who hold my hand and hold me up when I stumble.

Without them, I’d land flat on my face in the dust of discouragement — and just stay there.

In Your Words: Who are you going hand-in-hand with? Who holds onto you when you stumble?

  1. Beautifully put. My grandkids slow me down (in positive ways) and give loving support, help me to take time to smell the roses–or barn yard. Their unsolicited hugs are priceless. I’m also thankful for loving yet honest friends to critique or be in life accountability with.

    1. Melissa,
Sounds as if you are surrounded by people willing and able to hold your hand as you walk through life.

  2. Jesus is my number one Catcher and behind him are several good friends who shoot straight with me, sometimes applying balm to my bruised ego and other times telling me to get over it. They always seem to know which one I need. lol
    Great post, Beth.

  3. God first. Then, my husband, then friends and family. Knowing I am loved when I mess up gives such freedom to grow from my mistakes without fear of being judged. I’m thankful for my husband who cheers me on in this writing journey, and for friends (like you!) who encourage and guide me, seeing the good in my attempts and not just the areas that need improving. 🙂

    1. Jeanne — who knew what God started so many years ago when we first met? I am thankful God had a return ticket waiting for you after your family moved to Las Vegas.
      🙂

  4. For as long as I live, I will be forever be in awe of the man God gave to me as a husband. He holds onto me when I stumble and he doesn’t let go. He also holds me back when I want to run, and it’s not time, and he sometimes pulls me when I want to put in my feet. But the times when we run together, hand in hand, those are the times of great joy.

I said this on my reply to you on my blog, but last night I spent the evening with Alli, Daniel and Seth! I’m eager to get back and find out how Alli is after the avalanche! Ahh!

  5. I could list them as God, hubby, and my dogs – when I’m down, they lift my spirits with a hand or a paw.

  6. I love the idea of a “flourish of grace.” Beautiful! When I stumble, my best friend knows me inside and out. She knows what to say – and what not to say, both being equally important. I’m so very thankful for her, and for your words that reminded me to thank God for her. Again.

  7. My best friend keeps me going, holding my hand even though we are thousands of miles apart. My husband is also the guy who knows me best and lifts me up with others get me wrong:)
