The Romance of Words

Just the other day, I wrote about how romance requires a kiss.

Last night I wrote my blog post over at the WordServe Water Cooler — using the movie The Princess Bride as an analogy for the writing life.

Thanks to Westley, aka “Farm Boy,” and Buttercup, I realized how vital words are to romance.

As you wish.

Three one-syllable words. But, in the context of The Princess Bride, when Westley speaks those words to Buttercup, he’s saying something much, much more.

As the narrator says in the movie: “As you wish” was all he ever said … That day, she was amazed to discover that when he said, “As you wish,” what he meant was, “I love you.”

Words — such a vital part of a romance. When a man and a woman are falling in love, what’s spoken between them draws them closer together. (And, no, I’m not even going to begin to discuss what’s not spoken …)

In Your Words: Any special words come to mind from your own real-life romance? Or any favorite movie lines that make you sigh and think, “Isn’t it romantic?”

Just for fun: Here’s the opening scene from The Princess Bride with some of the most romantic words ever! httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbX1U1tx9aw

  1. My hubby calls my Wifely, and I love that endearment. I, in turn, call him Gwynly. While those pet names may not seem special to anyone else, they work for us. Each carries special meaning. Words are like that, which is why I like words. =)

    1. It’s funny how words that may seem insignificant to others can be so, so important to our romance. My husband calls me “Girl.” I call him “Boy.”
      Silly, I know.
But, hey, it works for us. 🙂

  2. My honey still refers to me as “his bride.” I call him my honey dear. Little pet names we made up for each other in our earliest days, and they’ve stuck.

  3. I am not really a romantic. My hubby and I usually call each other Babe. He also calls me “Spouse” sometimes, cause we are silly. And the silliest term of endearment he calls me is Broadzilla. Yep. We’re romantic, aren’t we?!

    1. Kelly,
Whatever works for you and yours! 🙂
I wouldn’t say “Boy” and “Girl” are the most romantic terms of endearment … but they work for me and my husband! 🙂

  4. When we were first dating, my husband and I kept our relationship to ourselves for awhile. But he invented a ‘signal’ we used when at church or other group funtions–he would tug on his ear to say ‘I love you’.

I went away to college for four (long) years, and it was a very long-distance relationship. My college was really conservative, and there was a no PDA policy. We wrote scads of letters back and forth, and Matt always wrote these letters on the envelope seal: ILY-CYK (I love you–consider yourself kissed). Those letters fill several hat boxes in our bedroom. A sweet reminder.

  5. I think most loving couples have pet names for each other. We both use dear and my husband also calls me Suzy. And sometimes he calls my daughters the little Suzies. Strange but true. 🙂
