In Others’ Words: Beautiful Things and Joy

A Thing of Beauty 2015

You’ve heard the saying just as often as I have: Stop and smell the roses.

This week I stopped and looked at the roses sitting on my kitchen counter … over and over and over again.

In the midst of the busyness, not to mention in the midst of the dirty dishes cluttering my sink, and the need-to-look-at-it pile of mail, and my daughter’s book bag and laptop …

… there were the roses. A definite “thing of beauty” that brought me, and anyone else who saw them, moments of joy all week long.

Beautiful things. How often do we rush by them and miss the joy they offer us?

      1. Somehow, I am reminded of a poem, as I do keep going…

We are those fools who would not rest
in the dull earth we left behind,
but burned with a passion for the West,
and drank strange frenzy from its wind.
The world where wise men live at ease
        fades from our unregretful eyes
        as blind across uncharted seas
        we stagger on our enterprise.

  1. I am surrounded by two “things of beauty” all day, my girls! I find myself getting lost in their expressions and learning, in awe of how beautiful they are physically and in their entire being–inside and out! I have been on a quest to try to take joy in things as easily as Ali Beth (my 22 month old) these last few weeks. I amazed at what she gets joy from as well as how easily I see her spread joy to others. We thank God for her ability to put a smile on others’ faces and brighten a room with her presence.

  2. Amen to Katie Beth. And for me yesterday proved again that things are fun if you’re with the right people, no matter the conditions. The wife & co-head of the awesome Philippines ministry I love to be involved in is here for a few days. She wanted to see my small farm. Her schedule allowed only yesterday, and it poured rain. We went anyway, slogged through drenched places, got wet, but had fun anyway. Good lesson re-learned, and I still have a smile on my face.

  3. My family. Life gets so busy I forget to stop and cherish moments with them rather than rushing through. And they’re growing so quickly!

  4. Luscious, magenta geraniums! They’re gathered on my patio awaiting a summer bed. Every time I gaze out my kitchen window my heart dances again knowing they’ll soon greet us at our front door every day till October. Colors make my heart sing. They really do. Especially this gorgeous, purply pink. And I have a loved one facing cancer surgery next week, so the reminder of life and loveliness points me back to my beautiful, sovereign, creator God who cared enough to paint each petal pink, gave me sight to take it in, and will surely hold us all through this journey.
