In Others’ Words: Celebrating More

celebrate more quote Peters 2.19.14Got anything to celebrate today?

Is it something you’d like to celebrate again … and again … and again?

I’m celebrating sending off a novella manuscript — and hoping to celebrate that more in the future.

I’m celebrating how my daughters and sons-in-love and daughter-in-love  create a heart-expanding vision of family.

And I’m anticipating the celebrations that will happen once I’m in the midst of an upcoming writers retreat. (Can you say “These people get me?”)

  1. Reading this, I’ve realized that I’ve fallen out of the habit of celebrating. Life became a slog, with occasional exhausted breaks.

After which, in Housman’s words, it’s “square your shoulders, lift your pack, and go.”

Part of it’s illness, the feeling that there is too much to do, and a looming horizon. Understandable, I guess. as I was writing this line I sneezed, and felt like I was going to rip in half.

But there also seems to be a misplaced set of priorities, that joy and celebration are supposed to be a part of our business here on earth, in the way that C.S. Lewis said that “joy is the serious business of Heaven”.

Maybe the more serious the situation, the less seriously you should take it?

I bet you celebrate every dog you rescue, my friend.
      And that is worth celebrating.
God says a righteous man takes care of his animals.
      And so you do.
      And I celebrate that.

  2. I had expected family bonding times to increase through celebration gatherings after marriage and then childbirths. Instead the best bonding is happening as we all face hardship together and dig deeper. Thankful and know that in this case, stabilized health of a brand new granddtr., lasting improvement will come soon.

  3. Hmm, I’m celebrating a great morning with my sometimes stormy boys. 🙂 It’s always a good way to begin the day. I’m celebrating the sparks of a new story that I’m looking forward to brainstorming with friends very soon. I’m celebrating the opportunities God gives me to choose joy each day. And yes, sometimes it IS a choice. Loved this post. 🙂
