In Others’ Words: Lesson Learned

learning quote Larry King 2014

I thought it would be fun to talk about lessons learned this week.

I could share about learning the lesson “Don’t try to get up and walk around when your foot is completely numb” — yeah, still recovering from that lesson.

But it’s Friday. And this quote from Larry King struck home in a “Huh. Ain’t that the truth!” kind of way:

I never learned anything while I was talking.Β

Me, either.

In Your Words: So tell me, what have you learned this week? Join the conversation. We’re listening.

  1. Hope the foot is slowly improving -and that the boot so fetchingly modeled on FB is letting you hobble!

I learned some painful truths, about how differently people can see situations and relationships.

    But tomorrow is another day.

      Painful truths, hmmm?
      Don’t really care for those.
And yes, people often see situations and relationships differently. The question is, do they see with compassion and empathy … or not?

      I’m hobbling, Andrew. I’m hobbling.

  2. So that’s how the accident happened.
Actually, to my grateful shock, sometimes I have learned things while talking, most notably when my mother was near death and my sister phoned me pop-quiz style to reassure Mom re. the realities of eternity and heaven. I learned several things that day I hadn’t known before, most of all a higher level of God’s faithfulness and wisdom.
Fun post, though, and hope you do well quickly.

      Dee,
There are times when God has spoken through me — when words flowed out of my mouth and all the time I’ve thought, “Huh, I didn’t know I knew that.”
But see, it wasn’t my wisdom speaking after all — and in a sense, I was listening all along.
And yes, the injury occurred when I made the mistake of starting to walk when I didn’t realize my foot/leg had fallen asleep. Two steps in, I thought, “Wait a minute, I can’t feel my foot.”
      And then down I went.
No grace in the accident at all.

  3. I love this quote! I guess because it’s so true. What have I learned this week? That broken hearts don’t always mend. My aunt died 6 months to the day after my mother, her sister) passed away. But now, they are keeping all of heaven awake catching up!

I was browsing quotes, Pat, and thinking “Not that one, not that one” –and this one stopped me cold. So, so true.
And yes, I believe you’re right about broken hearts. Profound truth.

  4. Hope your foot’s feeling better, Beth…and that the deadline writing is coming along well. (In the trenches with you…not foot-wise, but writing-wise. πŸ™‚ )

As for what I’ve learned this week: No matter how much there is to do or how far behind I feel, sometimes the best thing I can do is take a walk and talk to a friend on the phone and get involved in someone else’s life rather than just letting myself get buried in my own. Friends are awesome. πŸ™‚

My foot is healing — and sometimes laughter is the best medicine. Well, it is always the best medicine. And the cuddles of a little dog, when he lays his head across my sore ankle.

  5. I’m so sorry you are experiencing a foot injury after your back surgery and finally being able to walk around without pain. I hope you heal quickly so you can get to using your Fitbit again.

As for what I’ve learned this week: It’s okay to let someone else counsel my children on life choices, because sometimes they listen better to someone else, than they do to me or my husband πŸ™‚

Thanks, Anne. I admit that I hate losing my independence again so soon. But I’m hoping to be walking again soon.
And my husband and I always prayed for our children to have other wise adults speaking into their lives — backing up our values and principles. Because, yes, sometimes they heard the words of others more easily than they heard us.

  6. Poor girl! I hope you’re up and trotting around soon. Praying for you.

I learned that I set myself up for failure when I set my expectations way too high. Because I’m a dedicated perfectionist, this lesson’s going to take a while to soak in.

I nodded as I read your lesson learned, Sherry. I bought myself a T-shirt year ago. It reads: When at first your don’t succeed, lower the bar.
      Love it!

  7. Great quote, Beth! In reading the replies, I found that I agree with all of them. So, I guess, I’ve learned that hanging out with people of like mind can be reconfirming.

In other news, I learned that you need to “string” fresh green beans before cooking/serving them πŸ™‚

      Hi, Kathy,
This is one of the reasons I love this blog: the conversation and all I learn “listening” to others.
      “Stringing” green beans, huh?
      That’s new info for me.

  8. Do you know, that’s how mom broke her ankle? What is it about tingling feet?

I’ve always tried to learn something from everyone I meet. Whether it’s good or bad, I figure I can learn from the experience.
